MY LETTER TO EVERY ELDER...
Yesterday’s News, in a local daily, of a young Muslim boy
slit the head of 5 of his close family members including his mother and father
in a village near Narora, the place famous of it atomic power plant in
Bulandshahar district, was quite disturbing for me. Many times during the day
the thought crossed my mind “why would someone do such an act which even animal
wouldn’t do”? There are few things came out, there are these concepts of life
which get hard wired in our system mainly till the age of 14-15 years, called
“samskaras” in Indian philosophy. If the kids and adolescent are given right
“samskaras” such things will never happen. This man and his wife killed the
whole family for the family property, so if the parents discuss and acts based
on the concepts that money and property is everything this is what next
generation gets as value system.
In my primary school every classroom has a “samskrit” saying
written on the entry gate. Few of them I use to read and think-about all most
everyday and some of them have actually become part of my life.
Mother and father are divine, our Guru and teacher are
divine and the guests coming to our home are also divine. Now when something
like this gets hardwired in a growing up mind at the early age when the values
and concepts of the life are getting formed, the mind will not attract opposite
thoughts and deeds. Like in my 8th standard one of my teachers many time use to
repeat “जैसा खाओगे अन्न, वैसा हो जायेगा मन” (your mind becomes
what you eat). It was very-very hard for my system to try and accept
non-vegetarian in my second year of engineering. Same level of resistance my
nervous system showed, when I tried my hands on alcohol in final year. So if we
create a strong resistance and negative impression for all kind of addiction at
early age as grow ups our kids will never attract such things. We as elders
should associate pride with humbleness and one who uses the abusive and bad
language should be looked down upon. Movies, media, parents and teachers should
associates pride with right food and eating habits and shame should be
associated with addictions and alcoholism. Seeing divine in parents, guru and
teachers and guests should be nurtured and praised, disrespect and violence
should be looked down as something really shameful.
As Guru Sri Sri Ravishankar ji says caring, sharing,
compassion and friendliness is our true nature, every child by birth has these
values. He has in fact developed very practical workshops Art Excel and YES
(Youth Empowerment and Skills) for growing up mind to rediscover and live these
values in our day-to-day life. We as
parents and teachers have this responsibility to nurture these values in them,
keep them stress free, give them the right “samskaras”.

Main switch lies with us! It is our responsibility....
